Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

Most of us are under the impression that arthritis is something that only affects adults of a certain age. But there is a type of arthritis that can affect children as young as 8. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis – also known as RA – is a chronic disease that is so severe it will cause extensive and long lasting damage to the joints. This damage that will potentially destroy the affected joints – is caused by joint inflammation.

This inflammation is a response from the body’s immune system and will stimulate other symptoms that include; stiffness, pain, and swelling. In certain cases the inflammation can spread to other organs in the body.

RA is a compilation of several different diseases with one common symptom; joint inflammation. Other than this one symptom the diseases involved are different in the way that they have to be treated and other symptoms that they present.

Researchers have not been able to determine what causes RA. It is similar to other the adult form of RA as well as other auto immune diseases. During these types of diseases the body’s immune system will attack certain tissues to protect it from something that is not there.
