New studies are urging women to lose weight if they have the desire to have any children. It has always been said that women who are overweight will have a harder time conceiving. Those that are able to have a higher risk of delivering babies with serious birth defects.

“We found that being obese in pregnancy can increase a woman’s risk of having a range of birth defects,” said Judith Rankin a study senior author, a reader in maternal and perinatal epidemiology at Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. “A further finding is that women who are overweight may also be at an increased risk, although the research evidence is not so clear and further work is needed,” she said.

Medical research proved a long time ago that obesity in pregnancy can cause gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, a high risk of blood clots and infection. Babies that are born to women who are obese have a higher risk of perinatal death and of struggling with weight in the future.

In order to better understand the situation Rankin had 2,000 studies on pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy birth and weight defects. 39 of these studies were included in their review. With the information they had they were able to determine that the risk of a neural tube defect in children born to obese women was 87% higher than women who were at a normal weight.

Rankin went on to say that they were not sure what exclusively about obesity caused birth defects. Rankin poin did say that despite their findings the absolute risk of an obese woman having a baby with birth defects is still low. “Birth defects occur in between 2 and 4 percent of all pregnancies, so the risk, even in obese women, remains low. If a woman who is obese is thinking of having a baby, the most important thing is to speak to their doctor and to think about their weight and diet so that they eat healthily and sensibly,” she said.

It wouldn’t be officially the New Year without a little mayhem from the health department! Already federal officials are testing the 5 pound tubs of peanut butter in Minnesota to see if it is responsible for an outbreak of salmonella typhimurium that has spread all around the nation. 400 people in 42 states are already sick.

King Nut Companies in Solon, Ohio sells and distributes only to hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and restaurants. On Saturday they issued a voluntary recall.

Stephanie Kwisnek – the spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration – stated that the tests being conducted have not been completed yet – but they could be linked to the outbreak that has been occurring for three months. Results should be found early this week. “There is insufficient information at this time to conclusively link this product to the national outbreak,” she says.

The Department of Health in Minnesota had tested a tub of peanut butter that was taken from a nursing home after many of the patients had been sick after eating it. The peanut butter had tested positive for generic salmonella. “We’ve have 30 illnesses in Minnesota that are connected to the outbreak strain, and all of those 30 report eating some type of peanut butter, and many if not most of them have been connected to this King Nut brand,” Schultz says.

According to King Nut the particular spread had been manufactured by Peanut Corp of America – which is located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The FDA has already started testing at this plant. The president of PCA – Stewart Parnell – said that they do not sell peanut butter in retail sizes.

In a release Sunday, the company stated: “To date, the only conclusive testing linking salmonella to PCA’s product was done on an open container of the peanut butter in a large, institutional kitchen. The history of the handling of that open container is unknown at this time.”

King Nut is asking customers to stop distributing all peanut butter with lot codes beginning with “8,” sold as King Nut peanut butter and Parnell’s Pride peanut butter, says president Martin Kanan.

“We are very sorry this happened,” Kanan says. “We are taking immediate and voluntary action because the health and safety of those who use our products is always our highest priority.”

What happened to letting fate decide? It seems that the more technology grows the less we leave things up to chance. With the right amount of money people can now choose what sex their baby will be and now they are able to decide what sport they would best perform in when they are older. How? Through a genetic test.

Donna Campiglia is just one of hundreds of parents who were lining up to test their children. She wanted to test her 2 ½ year old son Noah to see what he would be best at. “I could see how some people might think the test would pigeonhole your child into doing fewer sports or being exposed to fewer things, but I still think it’s good to match them with the right activity,” Ms. Campiglia from Boulder, Colorado said. “I think it would prevent a lot of parental frustration,” she said.

Boulder, Colorado is full of parents who are not only sports oriented – but also health conscious. It is no wonder that many of them are paying $149 to predict what sport their child can win at. The test is very simple and painless. All it requires is a simple swab inside the mouth of the child in order to collect DNA. The DNA will then be sent to a lab for analysis of the ACTN3 gene.

The test will show if the child is better at power, speed, or endurance sports. In 2003 a study was performed that showed a link between ACTN3 and the different athletic abilities. Atlas executives (that are performing these tests) did warn parents to the fact that there are still certain limitations – but they believe it could be a step in the right direction to help their child receive scholarships.

The companies’ goal is to test children from when they are infants till they are 8 years old. There are some experts who believe that testing an infant is completely useless. Dr. Theodore Friedmann, the director of the University of California-San Diego Medical Center’s interdepartmental gene therapy program, called it “an opportunity to sell new versions of snake oil.” “This may or may not be quite that venal, but I would like to see a lot more research done before it is offered to the general public,” he said. “I don’t deny that these genes have a role in athletic success, but it’s not that black and white.”

The Papua province in Indonesia will be passing a bylaw that will allow them to implant HIV/AIDS patients with microchips. They are hoping that this method will help to keep them from infecting those who are healthy.

The new bylaw stated that patients who have expressed “actively sexual behavior” are more likely to be implanted with the microchip in order to monitor their activity. Naturally this new method has caused a large uproar among the many human rights activists

“It’s a simple technology. A signal from the microchip will track their movements and this will be received by monitoring authorities,” lawmaker John Manangsang said. Any HIV/AIDS patient that is discovered to infect someone who is healthy will be punished though they did not express what that punishment would be.

Local parliament has plans to introduce the new legislation in Papua by the end of the month. They hope to lower the cases of HIV/AIDS cases per year which right now is 100,000 people. This is 20 times the national average in Indonesia.
