Most of these products claim to be all natural or to only have herbal ingredients. But tests from the FDA discovered that many of them contain controlled substances and drugs that have not been approved in the U.S.

In most cases the amount of pharmaceutical ingredients were more than what the FDA has recommended. This poses a health risk to anyone using it. These drugs can cause high blood pressure, fast heart rate, seizures, heart attacks, strokes, and palpitations.

For two years a high number of deaths have been caused by the illegal street version of a painkiller we know as fentanyl. It has killed over 1,000 people according to the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many of the fatal overdoses occurred between 2005 and 2007 before the police were able to find many of the places that the drugs were being supplied from. That outbreak was the first time illicitly produced fentanyl was linked to such a large increase in deaths in the U.S., as opposed to fatalities from heroin or other drugs commonly sold on the street.

Fentanyl is a strong prescription painkiller that is manufactured by many pharmaceutical companies and is usually taken in the form of a lollipop or patch. It is often given to patients who are suffering from cancer or who have other severe and chronic pains.

It can be made by rogue chemists into a lethal narcotic powder that is much more powerful than heroin, said T. Stephen Jones, a consultant and former CDC official who was the report’s lead author. This illegal powder version can be sold mixed with cocaine or heroin or as a substitute for heroin.

A cluster of deaths in Camden, N.J., first brought the matter to officials’ attention. Health and law-enforcement officials then identified similar waves in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis and other areas, according to a report published Thursday. The report tallied at least 1,013 deaths, though its lead author said many deaths likely went unreported.

The 2005-07 outbreak largely subsided after officials shut down a fentanyl-producing operation in Mexico suspected as the main source. Still, the CDC report noted that painkillers continue to play a big role in fatal drug overdoses, and said deaths from unintentional drug poisonings doubled to 22,448 between 1999 and 2005.

Dr. Cassian Yee started a study that could possibly cure patients that have been diagnosed with melanoma through a new experimental treatment. In their study Dr. Yee treated a 52 year old man by injecting him with 5 billion of his own white blood cells. The cells that they injected or know also as Killer T cells and are the cells in the body that help to fight tumors in the body.

The cells were taken from the patient, cloned, and then given back to him. In spite of the advanced stage of his cancer, which had spread to his lungs and groins, the 52 year old man was completely healthy in 60 days since the cure had started. Two years after, the former melanoma patient did not present any signs that the disease came back.

While the results sound like good news, there is a downside to the story. The treatment was given to another 8 patients, and even though some of them have shown improvement, none had his cancer disappear.

Pharmaceutical companies don’t seem to be interested in the results of this study so far. This method of treatment is based on creating a new cure for every patient, since he or she needs to be given his or her own white blood cell. The companies that are looking for creating a general cure for cancer will have to wait for other studies to be published.

The cost of this new treatment is at least $30,000 and the places where one can get it are few, because artificially growing white blood cells is a complicated process, and only a few facilities have the required equipment.

Both newer and the conventional antipsychotic drugs can increase the chances and risk of death in patients who suffer from dementia. These drugs have not been proven to treat dementia – but are used to treat the majority of patients who suffer from schiziphrenia.

But people with dementia sometimes suffer delusions or hallucinations and may exhibit violent behavior. Doctors may prescribe antipsychotics to control these behaviors. In 2005, the FDA warned that clinical trial data strongly suggested that newer “atypical” antipsychotics increase the risk of death in dementia patients. The agency required these drugs to carry its strongest “black box” warning on their labels.

Now, based on observational studies, the FDA warns that older antipsychotics also seem to increase dementia patients’ risk of death. These drugs, too, will carry a black box warning. “We just don’t understand the mechanism, but there is an excess risk of mortality when these drugs are used for this indication,” Thomas Laughren, MD, director of the FDA division of psychiatry products, said in a news conference.

Laughren stressed that the FDA is not telling doctors to avoid the use of antipsychotic drugs in dementia patients. The warning, he says, is meant to help families balance the risks of these medications against their benefits. The new warning comes from observational studies that do not prove conclusively that the older drugs carry the same risk as the newer drugs.

“We struggled with this decision, but in the end we decided it was important to include the warning on the older drugs,” Laughren said.
Older antipsychotic drugs are more likely than newer atypical antipsychotics to cause troublesome “extrapyramidal” symptoms such as tics and parkinsonism. But the drugs, many in use since the 1950s, are still being prescribed.

Older drugs that will carry the black-box warning are often known by their generic names. They include Compazine (prochlorperazine), Haldol (haloperidol), Loxitane (loxapine), Mellaril (thioridazine), Moban (molindrone), Navane (thithixene), Orap (pimozide), Prolixin (fluphenazine), Stelazine (trifluoperazine), Thorazine (chlorpromazine), and Trilafon (perphenazine). Newer drugs that continue to carry the black-box warning include Abilify, Clozaril, FazaClo, Geodon, Invega, Risperdal, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Symbyax.

Recent research raises the possibility that rosiglitazone (also known as the drug Avandia), a popular diabetes drug used to improve the body’s response to insulin, may increase bone thinning and with long-term treatment could lead to osteoporosis. This discovery that could help to explain why diabetics can have an increased risk of bone fractures.

While bones appear solid, they are constantly being broken down and rebuilt by the body. In mice, researches found Avandia caused an increased activity of the cells that degrade bones. The assumption had always been that brittle bones in diabetics were the result of a reduced bone-building activity, not increased bone removal. This is according to a report published in this week’s online issue of Nature Medicine, the first attempt to really explain the link between the drug and fractures.

This finding “has led to a better understanding of the challenges associated with long-term treatment of patients with Type II diabetes… It also provides a basis for the development of a ’next generation’ of drug that can specifically dial out this side effect and a new insight into a previously unrecognized aspect of bone physiology that has important medical consequences” said Ronald M. Evans of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., lead author of the report.

GlaxoSmithKline, which markets the drug, has already acknowledged a higher risk of fractures among women who take the drug although no prior explaination has been offered as to why this happens. Avandia was also recently labeled with warnings about the risk of heart failure in some patients.

Nearly 21 million people in the United States have diabetes. Rosiglitazone is widely used in people with Type II, or adult onset diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
